Artist Statement: DNA Replication, A Black Boy Tale

In this piece, the Artist and the Model attempt to encapsulate many of the various processes and enzymes involved in DNA Replication. The Artist is modeling the DNA strand, while the Model is acting as the enzyme and embodying each enzyme's “persona.” Pictures here are enzymes like DNA Polymerase, Primase, Gyrase, and Ligase. The race of the two is important to note. Black individuals in STEM are bold and continue to drive the notion that they can succeed in an environment perpetually against them. These two individuals push back on that concept by not only being in STEM, but modeling it as well.
